Optical Symposium 2026 Session 1: Building out metro, long haul and subsea networks with 200+Gbaud coherent connections – Thursday, September 10, 2026

The demands for AI scale across and DCI network connections require coherent technology with ever higher symbol rates, enabling higher data rates over longer distances. The introduction of 130-140GBd coherent solutions enabled the widespread deployment of 800G connections and links over 1,000km. The first 1.6T coherent systems are now being deployed with 200GBd symbol rates.

New 200GBd+ DSPs are being introduced to support 1.6T coherent pluggables and longer distance 1.6T, and higher bandwidth, coherent connections.

This session will explore the latest developments for 200GBd+ coherent connections across AI data centers and carrier networks.

Topics will Include:

  • Metro, long haul, and subsea networks in the 200GBd+ AI era
  • DSP and optical developments for 200GBd+ systems
  • Deploying pluggable coherent modules in long haul networks
  • Where next for coherent optical networking in metro, long-haul and subsea networks

This session will be moderated by Simon Stanley, Analyst at Large, GTM Telecom Insights and Advisory , OMDIA

Speakers:

  • Simon Stanley, Analyst at Large, Components & Subsystems, GTM Telecom Insights and Advisory
  • Robert Shore, Head of Network Infrastructure Portfolio Marketing, Nokia
  • Zishan Ahmed Siddiquee, Senior Network Architect, Colt Technology Services

Optical Symposium 2026 Session 2: Managing Coherent Optics in IP over DWDM – Thursday, September 10, 2026

For communications service providers (CSPs) the capex and opex savings benefits of IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) architectures are too compelling to ignore, but while hypescalers have experienced massive IPoDWDM adoption, CSPs are proceeding much more cautiously. Omdia surveys repeatedly show that, for CSPs, management complexity is among the chief barrier to adopting IPoDWDM – despite its benefits. This session takes an in-depth look at IPoDWDM for CSPs, with a focus on addressing IPoDWDM management and control in complex, multi-vendor networks.

Key topics will include:

  • The pros and cons of IPoDWDM management with IP controllers, optical controllers, and hierarchical controllers.
  • The essential role of OIF CMIS standardization for plug-to-host management o Host dependent versus host independent pluggables management options
  • Migration to “pluggable transponder” architectures (also known as “thin transponders”) as a compromise between traditional transponders and integrated optics in routers
  • Work from important standards organizations in IPoDWDM management, including IETF, OIF, TIP, and others

This session will be moderated by Sterling Perrin, Sr. Principal Analyst, GTM Telecom Insights and Advisory , OMDIA

Speakers:

  • Sterling Perrin, Senior Principal Analyst, Optical Networks & Transport, GTM Telecom Insights and Advisory, Omdia
  • Chris Page, Vice President of R&D (Active & Advanced Technology), Belden
  • Juan Pedro Fernández-Palacios, Manager Transport, CTIO, Telefónica SA
  • Rubén Hernández Villeda, Head of the WDM Transmission Laboratory, Bouygues Telecom
